How to change your Ebox WiFi password
Your Ebox router comes with a default WiFi name and password printed on a sticker on the device. Here's how to change it to something memorable:
- Connect to your Ebox router — either via WiFi using the default password on the sticker, or via ethernet cable.
- Open your browser and go to 192.168.0.1 — this is the router admin page. If this doesn't work, check the sticker on your router for the correct admin IP address.
- Log in with admin credentials — the default username and password are printed on the router sticker. Common defaults are admin/admin or admin/password.
- Go to Wireless settings — find the WiFi or Wireless section in the menu.
- Update your WiFi name (SSID) and password — choose a strong password (12+ characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbols). Save the settings.
- Reconnect your devices — all devices on your network will need to reconnect using the new password.
Ebox routers typically support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Give them different names (e.g. "HomeWiFi" and "HomeWiFi-5G") so you can manually choose the faster 5 GHz band when you're close to the router.
How to run an Ebox speed test
Testing your Ebox internet speed takes under 60 seconds. For the most accurate result:
- Connect via ethernet — plug your laptop directly into the Ebox modem with an ethernet cable. WiFi speed tests include signal loss that doesn't reflect your actual plan speed.
- Close all other apps and tabs — pause any downloads or streaming before testing.
- Go to fast.com or speedtest.net — both are free and accurate. Click the start button.
- Compare to your plan — your result should be within 10–15% of your subscribed speed. A 500 Mbps plan should show 425–500 Mbps via ethernet.
If your ethernet speed test shows significantly less than your plan speed, restart your modem (unplug for 30 seconds) and test again. If still low, contact Ebox support via chat at ebox.ca — they can run diagnostics remotely.
How to reset your Ebox router
A factory reset should be a last resort — it erases all custom settings. Try restarting first (unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in).
To factory reset: locate the small reset button on the back of your Ebox router (it's recessed in a small hole). Press and hold it with a pin or paperclip for 10–15 seconds until the indicator lights flash. The router will restart with factory default settings. You'll need to set your WiFi name and password again from scratch.
Why is my Ebox WiFi slow? — 6 fixes
1. Router placement
Place your Ebox router centrally in your home, elevated (on a shelf, not the floor), away from thick concrete walls and large metal objects. Every wall your signal passes through reduces speed by 20–50%.
2. Use the 5 GHz band
If your Ebox router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect your devices to the 5 GHz network when you're within 10 metres of the router. It's 2–3x faster than 2.4 GHz at close range.
3. Restart your modem and router
Unplug both your modem and router. Wait 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in first and wait for it to connect (usually 60–90 seconds), then plug in the router. This clears memory and reconnects to the network fresh.
4. Check for interference
Microwaves, baby monitors, and neighbouring WiFi networks all interfere with the 2.4 GHz band. Log into your router admin (192.168.0.1) and change the WiFi channel to 1, 6, or 11 to reduce congestion.
5. Check connected devices
A device running background updates or syncing large files can consume most of your bandwidth. Check your router admin panel for connected devices and their usage.
6. Contact Ebox support
If none of the above helps, there may be a line issue in your building or neighbourhood. Contact Ebox via live chat at ebox.ca — they can run a remote line diagnostic and schedule a technician if needed.
